Guide for starting a cultivation

Updated over a month ago

Step 1 — Prepare your Shrooly

Check the HEPA filter

Always ensure the HEPA filter is correctly aligned by checking for the “This side up” marking on its top. The filter must be dry; otherwise, proper airflow won’t be achieved. Remember to replace the filter regularly to uphold a healthy growing environment.

Check the humidifier wick

Inspect the humidifier wick. If this is your first time using the wick, simply remove the humidifier and ensure the wick is in place.

Fill the tank

Always fill the Shrooly water tank with clean water up to the recommended maximum level of 400 ml / 13 oz. Overfilling can lead to spills that may damage the device. It’s also essential that the equipment used for refilling is kept clean to prevent contamination. Finally, remember to empty the water tank between cultivation cycles and refill it with fresh, clean water to maintain optimal performance. Make sure not to overfill the tank as it can result in damage to the humidifier or the entire device.

Step 2 — Start a cultivation program

Select “Start a cultivation”

Open the Shrooly app and choose “Start a cultivation.” Our app will guide you through the essential preparation steps.

Step 3 — Prepare and insert your Pod

Inspect your Pod

The Pod must be inspected on all sides for any visible green/greenish-blue/black/gray mold infection, as well as for any visible damage or tears on the Pod's bag.

Choose a clean location

Place your Shrooly away from air conditioners or fans, as poorly maintained units may harbor microbes that can decrease cultivation success rates. Additionally, keep pets away from the Pod to prevent fur contamination.

Make sure everything is squeaky clean

Before starting, wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Use the provided cleaning wipe to clean the top surface of the Pod and the blade of the knife you’ll use for opening it. This ensures a hygienic cultivation process.

Cut the Pod open

Disinfect the outer plastic packaging of the Pod and a knife using the alcohol wipe. Pay special attention to disinfecting the top of the Pod where you'll cut it open. Using the disinfected knife, carefully cut through the outer plastic packaging of the Pod. Make sure not to cut the Pod to deep while cutting the plastic packaging.

Wear clean clothing and avoid cutting Pods while wearing clothes used for dusty outdoor work or gardening. Wearing clean rubber gloves can also help prevent potential mold or bacteria infections on your Pod.

Spray at least 2-3 times

Fill the provided spray bottle with water and spray at least 2-3 times onto the surface of the Pod from a distance of 5 cm / 2 inches.

Insert the Pod

Position the open Pod into your Shrooly with the cut part facing upward to allow your precious mushrooms to begin growing freely. Close the doors on both sides and ensure a snug fit for efficient humidification.

Step 4 — Sit back and relax

Let Shrooly take care of the rest

With built-in precise humidity and water level sensors, your Shrooly ensures your mushrooms are well-tended. If your mushrooms require attention, our app ensures you’re promptly notified.
